Phantom Menace menaced by phantom?

Found and got the VHS tape of Star Wars Episode:I at the end of last month. Used condition. Yes, I was weary of the condition of the tape and if it still contained the movie on it but got it anyway. It played with a little minor lines of fuzz at the beginning when I got it home. Nothing too bad to take away from the movie. I figured the start of it still had the movie on it and it’ll take a play through to be sure which I was going to do later.

Then comes later (about 2 weeks later). I should have watched it all in one sitting. I left the tape in the TV/VCR combo of mine for later viewing. About a day goes past. Wouldn’t you know it, being that I bought the little TV/VCR combo years ago (it’s long past the warranty), the dang thing decides to go bad. Tape stuck and the TV won’t even stay on. Press the power button and it comes on for about 2 seconds and dies off. Now it complete died taking the tape with it. So far the old TV has just been place in a box until it gets properly trashed. I’ll try again another day to see if I can salvage the tape from it’s innards. Update: August 24, 2004. Long disposed of the TV and I was not able to remove the tape. If not possible… oh, well.

Just when I get to get a chance to see the non-edited Made–for–TV version of the movie. Thank goodness it was this used tape that was cheap at Goodwill and not one of my Star Wars Trilogy box set tapes that I got as a gift during one of the holidays past.

Luckily there was a spare TV around, no VCR built in though. The digital cable company use to have this little reward program where you collected some points useable towards some items they were offering like: duffle bags with cable station logos, hats cable station logos, portable CD players, a 13″ color TVs, mini 2.3″ portable color TVs, t-shirts cable station logos etc. All you had to do was add $5.00 for shipping. Another plus about this newer TV is that it doesn’t cut off the top and bottom of the screen. I can view the whole picture! Couldn’t with the other TV and there was no way to fix it. No knobs or anything to fix the V-hold (vertical) or H-hold (horizontal).

Now I can still watch the news, Jeopardy, CSI, West Wing (sometimes), ER, Law & Order: insert subtitle acronym here, Fraiser, etc. No cable attached in this room anyway but things are back to normal—for now.
